WHY USE ZENOME
Editors of Categories
Every category editor receives ongoing commissions for their work and commitment.

Anyone can apply to be an editor of numerous categories.

The basic requirements to apply are provided by clicking:
"Community" > "Apply To Be Editor"

Or,

While on a category page that does not have an editor, select: "Apply To Be The Editor Of This Zenome Category".

Indexers
Indexing on Zenome is free, easy, and immediate.

And, indexers have a chance to receive cash bonuses based on the relevance, quality, and quantity of sites they index.

Our Indexing feature also allows indexers to provide detailed information about sites (which enables people to search by cross-referencing the information).

Indexers can also voice their opinion by 'voting' for the charitable organizations listed on Zenome. Each site indexed gets one vote for the indexer's charity of choice.

Searchers
Based on a library model, you can search using highly specific cross-reference points to obtain only indexed sites relevant to your search.

Furthermore, sites with check marks (v) have been verified by human editors to ensure their relevancy to your search.

We also use proprietary algorithms to continuously track and improve our search results.

There are more details about searching below in the Advanced Search section.

COMMISSIONS
Earning
  • Editors earn commissions based on a percentage of net ad revenues generated by their category, and a percentage of the overall ad revenue generated by Zenome. This is meant to encourage editors to maintain their own category, and also to share resources with each other.

  • Referrers receive a commission for every editor that they refer who is accepted to edit a category. The Referrer's commission is a small percentage of the editor's commission, and the referrer receives a fixed commission for a fixed period of time.

  • Indexers do not receive commission, but they do have a chance to receive cash bonuses based on the quantity and quality of sites they index. The bonuses are determined by the quantity and quality of sites indexed, not by their popularity or commercial potential. Everyone has the same chance to earn these bonuses, irrespective of the category (or categories) within which they are indexing. Indexers' bonuses are not ongoing commissions.

All bonuses and commissions are disbursed on a regular basis by email through a third party payment provider (see below). The only confidential information we require to compensate commission recipients is their email address.
Tracking
Editors can view their commission status at any time by logging in and selecting:
"Community" > "Profile"

Donating
Commissions can be donated to any one of the charities available through Zenome.

Editors can donate any portion of their commissions, at any time through their Profile Page.

Indexers can also voice their opinion by 'voting' for the charitable organizations listed on Zenome. Each site indexed gets one vote for the indexer's charity of choice.

The decision to donate commissions is irrevocable.

Indexing
"Indexers" have a chance to receive cash bonuses based on the relevance, quality, and quantity of sites they index.

It may take about ten minutes to Index a site the first time, but this option enables indexers to provide very specific, comprehensive information about the site.

There are numerous fields to be filled, but, like a traditional library, each provides a very precise cross-reference for the searcher.

Indexing allows indexers to differentiate between sites whose main content is primarily Text, Images, Audio, or Items or Services for sale. It also enables the inclusion of the author of the site, the date of publication, the file type, whether it is appropriate for users under 18, or even the specific geographic location of the site, where appropriate (i.e.: to facilitate local searches and sales).

By extension, our "Advanced Search" feature enables searchers to conduct highly precise searches by cross-referencing the fields indexed. (More on this in the "Advanced Search" section below.)

To effectively index a site, indexers are encouraged to first read the guidelines available under:
"Community" > "Style Guide"

To "Index" a site select:
"Index a Page" > "Index a Page"

HELP FOR EDITORS
Editors have access to an Editors' Forum, where they can exchange ideas with other Zenome editors. Because editors' commissions are based partly on Zenome's overall ad revenues, it is in everyone's interest to share resources.

Zenome's Style Guide provides helpful hints for indexing and evaluating the veracity of sites. The Style Guide is available by selecting the "Community" tab.

The "Editors' Rights & Responsibilities" document is also designed to help editors maintain their categories, and is available during the application process. Select:
"Community" > "Apply to be an Editor"

For further assistance, contact one of Zenome's Managing Editors.

LENGTH OF TIME FOR AN INDEXED SITE TO BE LISTED
When you "Index a Site", it will immediately be entered in the recommended category, and searchers can immediately find your site in the relevant category.

However, the site will be temporarily placed in a sub-category called "Unfiled".

The site will then be forwarded to the appropriate editor who will evaluate the content and determine whether it is suitable or relevant for the recommended category.

If the site is approved, it receives a check mark (v) that verifies its validity, and is then entered in the appropriate Sub-Category by the editor.

The editor may also reject the site, but recommend it for other appropriate categories.

Editors make every effort to verify sites in a timely manner, but posting verification may vary from category to category.

SEARCHING
Check marks beside URLs (v) indicate that a Zenome editor has verified the contents and relevance of the web site.

In the search results, sites with no check marks mean are being delivered by a search feed or, have not yet been verified by an editor.

Users can search Zenome based on a number of the following criteria.

Advanced Search
Zenome is like a new library that is slowly building its collection, so there are relatively few sites that have been Indexed. As a result, the Advanced Search function is disabled until the Zenome community Indexes a significant number of sites.

As soon as we reach a minimum threshold of indexed sites, users will be able to conduct highly specific searches that are cross-referenced with each field entered during the Indexing process.

With a series of focused questions, users will be prompted to narrow their search very precisely. This may take a few moments, but instead of being delivered thousands of sites, Advanced Searches will deliver only the indexed sites that are relevant to their query.

For example, searchers can request results only by author, date of publication, file type, whether the information has been peer reviewed, whether the site is primarily Text, Images, Audio or Video, or whether the site has Items or Services for sale. Where appropriate, searchers can also search by the geographic location of the site to help find local services.

The Advanced Search feature will be available by selecting the arrow to the right of the Search text box, and then "Advanced Search".

Default Search
After entering keywords in the search text box and hitting 'enter' the user is delivered sites relating to the keywords.

Category Search
After entering keywords in the search textbox, a user can click the arrow to the right and select "Category".

The user gets a list of all the categories that have sites indexed based on the keywords entered.

The user then has the option to select the category that most relates to their search.

Search Results - Customized Views
Zenome organically prioritizes the relevance of indexed sites based on a number of criteria.

This allows users to view search results results from a variety of customized views.

At the top of each Search Results page there is a drop-down menu preceded by the words: "View Search Results By".

Selecting the appropriate option from the drop-down menu provides search results by:
  • Alphabetical Order
  • Rating
  • Longest Visits
  • Most Visited Sites
  • Most Emailed Sites
  • Most Bookmarked Sites
  • Most Recently Indexed Sites

The default view, "Relevance", is based on active and passive searchers' patterns.

INDEXING A SITE IN THE APPROPRIATE CATEGORY
Zenome provides simple, intuitive tools to help indexers determine the most appropriate categories in which to index a site.

At the end of the indexing process, indexers are also prompted to suggest another appropriate category for the site.

Because our unique algorithm continuously evaluates the relevance of a site within a category, sites can be suggested for more than one category.

However, a category editor ultimately determines whether a site is permanently filed in a specific category.

Sites are immediately entered in the most appropriate "Unfiled" Sub-Section. If the site is determined to be in the 'wrong' Sub-Category, the editor will de-index it.

For detailed indexing instructions see the "Submitting A Site To Zenome" section above.

To effectively index a site, indexers are encouraged to first read the guidelines available under:
"Community" > "Style Guide"

ZENOME TOOLS
With one click any user can download specific tools to their personal web browser. These tools can improve the user's search, indexing, and editing experience.

Using the tools described below also helps Zenome organically grow to provide a more rewarding indexing and search experience.

Index
The Zenome taskbar has a tab called "Index a Page". Selecting "Index a Page" enables users to comprehensively index a site in the directory.

Indexing is made easier by placing the "Z-Index" icon on their web browser. To download a "Z-Index" icon select "Tools" from the Zenome Taskbar.

Rate a Site
When a user visits a site from our search results pages the Zenome taskbar has a tab called "Rate". Selecting Rate will allow users to rate the relevance of the site they are on. Rating sites affects the relevancy ranking of sites in the search results.

Rating a Site in the Zenome directory is made easier by placing the "Z-Rate" icon on your web browser.

To download a "Z-Rate" icon select "Tools" from the Zenome Taskbar.

Bookmark
(The bookmarking feature is only available to Zenome members.)

When members are within a Zenome window, they can bookmark any web page in a private, password-protected folder. Unlike the 'Favorites' tool on web browsers, bookmarked pages can be accessed from any internet connection at anytime.

Placing a "Z-Folder" icon on their web browser makes bookmarking even easier.

To download the "Bookmark" icon select "Tools" from the Zenome Taskbar.

Email A Site
When a user visits a site from the search results, the Zenome taskbar has a tab called "Email". This enables users to refer the site they are on to a friend.

Placing the "Z-Mail" icon on your web browser makes it even easier to email any site to friends.

To download a "Z-Mail" icon select "Tools" from the Zenome Taskbar.

Refer An Editor
Any Zenome member can refer a peer to be the editor of a category by selecting "Refer" from the Zenome Taskbar.

If the person is accepted as a category editor the referrer receives a fixed percentage of the editor's commissions as a referral reward.

To download the "Z-Refer" icon select "Tools" from the Zenome Taskbar.

POP-UP WINDOWS DO NOT OPEN
Some features on Zenome may not be accessible if you are using Windows XP-Service Pack 2 (SP2).

To enable Pop-Up Windows from the Zenome Site please take a few moments and follow these Simple Steps.

SUGGESTING NEW CATEGORIES
Members of the Zenome community, indexers, and editors can recommend relevant new sub-categories for the directory at any time.

The Zenome directory is designed to evolve and grow organically, determined by indexer and search patterns.

A new sub-category will be created based on the number of times over a given period it is suggested. For example, if a term like "SARS" enters our lexicon, a sub-category will be appended to the appropriate Parent Category

UPDATING LISTINGS
Once someone has indexed a site they cannot update their listing. This is to avoid constant changes to information.

However, indexers are invited to forward suggestions to the relevant category editor who can incorporate revisions.

If a site is in numerous categories, an editor's revisions will automatically be applied to the site regardless of the category it is in.

At the top of every Zenome Directory category there is a link to "Contact The Editor Of This Category".

If the category does not yet have an editor there is a link to "Apply To Be The Editor Of This Zenome Category".

CONTACTING EDITORS
Anyone can forward suggestions to any category editor.

At the top of every Zenome Directory category there is a link to "Contact The Editor Of This Category".

If the category does not yet have an editor there is a link to "Apply To Be The Editor Of This Zenome Category".

A SITE IS NO LONGER ON ZENOME
Zenome only de-indexes sites for valid reasons including but not limited to:
  • The site is in the process of being re-verified by an Editor
  • The URL is no longer active
  • The site has been deleted from one category but may still be in a more relevant one
  • The content of the site may be under review
  • The site has been found to violate our guidelines
  • Zenome generally does not index:
    • Redirecting URLs
    • Mirrored sites
    • Sites that are largely affiliate links
    • Illegal sites
CHARITIES
We routinely donate a small percentage of net ad revenues to charity and provide users the opportunity to 'vote' for their favorite charities from those listed on Zenome. Donations are dispersed based on the percentage of user votes.

Zenome also enables respected, recognized charities to be placed on the list of charities that users can vote for. To be considered for the list, charities should contact us at:
Charities@Zenome.com.

All of our payments are automated, billed, and dispersed through a third-party automatic payment system. We do not retain any additional administration or handling fees.

ADULT MATERIAL
Zenome has an adult category that deals with mature issues, and is intended for mature audiences. However, Zenome makes every attempt to prevent the indexing of pornographic material.

SITES FOR KIDS & TEENS
Zenome is edited by humans, therefore, sites in the "Kids + Teens" category should be virtually free of any inappropriate material.

We make every attempt to prevent the indexing of pornographic and illegal material, some content may, however, be considered inappropriate for persons under 18.

Alert: Sites in the "Unfiled" categories have not yet been verified by editors and may include inappropriate material.

PASSWORD RETRIEVAL
If a member has forgotten their password it can be emailed to them. They should go to:
"Community" > "Login" > "Did you forget your password"

SPONSORED LINKS
A link or site that has paid for inclusion and specific placement in the Directory is a 'sponsored link'. All sponsored links are indicated as such. When a user clicks on a sponsored link Zenome earns a modest fee. A percentage of that fee helps to compensate category editors.

To enhance the search experience, Zenome attempts to make all sponsored links as relevant to searchers' queries as possible.

If a sponsored link appears to be irrelevant, or in the wrong category, or if you want to be a Zenome sponsor please contact us at:
Sponsors@Zenome.com.

AFFILIATE
An affiliate appears as a banner or a link on a Zenome Page. When a user clicks on an affiliate banner and makes a purchase, Zenome earns a modest commission. A percentage of that commission helps to compensate category editors.

To enhance the search experience Zenome attempts to make all affiliate banners as relevant to searchers' queries as possible.

If an affiliate banner appears to be irrelevant, or in the wrong category, or if you want to be a Zenome affiliate please contact us at:
Sponsors@Zenome.com.

SITE RANKING IN SEARCH ENGINES
Zenome policy is to provide the most relevant search experience possible. It is against our policy to index sites simply so that they will be spidered by third party search engines. However, the most effective way to be accurately spidered by search engines is to index sites as precisely and relevantly as possible.

For help in getting better results in search engines it is best to contact the relevant search engines, or look up Search Engine Optimization (SEO), or Search Engine Marketing (SEM) on sites like SearchEngineWatch.com.

SPIDERING NEWLY VERIFIED SITES
It may take up to two weeks for sites indexed in Zenome to appear in search engine results.

Although no directory has any direct control over how often search engines spider them, we try to maintain our directory as efficiently as possible so that indexed sites are more likely to be effectively spidered.

The most effective way to be spidered by search engines is to index sites as precisely and relevantly as possible.

For help in getting better results in search engines it is best to contact the relevant search engines, or look up Search Engine Optimization (SEO), or Search Engine Marketing (SEM) on sites like SearchEngineWatch.com.

PAYPAL™
PayPal is a leading, trusted company that facilitates online payments. PayPal is owned by eBay™, and is used by millions of users on a regular basis.

PayPal is the third party, independent company that Zenome uses to distribute financial compensation, including monies donated to charity.
